Laser Hair Removal: What You Want to Know

young slender woman get hair removal procedure on legs. beauty cosmetic procedures in salon. beautiful woman has prefect smooth and soft skin on legsWe’re heading into sweater weather soon, which means we may be dressing in layers of clothing for the next several months. Why would this be a time of year when we would want to think about getting rid of unwanted hair? Shouldn’t that have been a concern we addressed before summer, not after? This is a common school of thought. However, because of the photosensitivity that laser treatments can cause, now is actually a fantastic time to schedule this service.

Here, we discuss a few of the details that patients often want to know before they schedule laser hair removal.

  • Treatment sessions are brief. Larger treatment areas can take up to an hour. Small areas like the upper lip or under the arms might take 20 minutes or less.
  • There is no downtime. After a laser hair removal session, it’s possible to resume most of your normal activities. You’ll want to avoid sun exposure and excessive heat from, say, a sauna or hot tub, but you can go back to work right away.
  • Results last a long time, but they aren’t permanent. Laser hair removal used to be referred to as “permanent hair removal.” It’s more like permanent hair reduction. Patients might experience some degree of regrowth at some point. It is difficult to say how much or when. However, studies have shown that, typically, any regrowth that occurs is sparse, light, and thin. Touch-up treatments may be performed as needed to address this.
  • Laser hair removal isn’t painful. The first laser hair removal devices that were developed were sophisticated, but they weren’t as refined as they would get over time. Early hair removal treatments weren’t all that comfortable. Today, advanced laser devices have significantly improved the comfort of treatment. Patients feel a warming sensation and may get a few “zaps” here and there.
  • Sun protection is necessary. One of the reasons to begin laser hair removal treatment now is because the sun is less intense than it is during the spring and summer months. Still, if the sun is out, sunscreen should be applied to the treatment area if it is exposed. This is necessary because laser-treated skin is photosensitive skin.

7 Details about Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal Hazleton, PASmooth, silky skin is a gift most of us wish we had all the time. The continual investment made into shaving, plucking, waxing, and trimming can go on for a lifetime if we let it. In recent years, more and more people are saying “no more!” With laser hair removal, this is entirely possible. If you want to eliminate the need to shave weekly, or daily, and still enjoy beautifully smooth skin, you may be interested in learning more about what laser hair removal can do. Here, we offer a few details.

Laser Hair Removal is Versatile

Laser hair removal is an office treatment that can take about an hour to complete.  A series of treatments is necessary to achieve lasting results, but these are scheduled about 8 weeks apart so they are completely convenient. Treatment works by vaporizing hair in the follicles at the time of treatment. The heat from the laser beam also disables hair follicles bit by bit. This is how hair growth is halted.

Treatment can be performed on a variety of areas, including the bikini area, legs, underarms, face, arms, and back, to name a few.

Laser Hair Removal is Comfortable

Many people imagine that getting hair “vaporized” right out of their hair follicles must be painful. It’s not. Here’s the trick: shave before your treatment. Laser light works by absorbing into the pigment in hair. When hair is solely within the follicle, it is destroyed so quickly that minimal sensation is felt. In this scenario, patients typically feel no more than a snap on the skin. If there is more length through which laser light must travel, there is a higher likelihood of feeling more intense sensations during treatment.

Results Start Immediately and Keep Getting Better

While it’s necessary to complete the recommended series of treatments to get lasting results, laser hair removal begins working immediately. After the very first treatment, the skin will be smoother and hair growth will occur at a slower rate. When hair does start to grow in due to the natural cycle of hair follicles, it is usually much lighter and thinner than before. With each subsequent treatment, the growth process is slower until it finally stops.

About Permanence

One of the biggest questions people have about laser hair removal is whether their results will be permanent. This can be a tricky question to answer because some people never experience regrowth after hair removal. However, a better term would probably be “semi-permanent.” In most situations, hair growth is permanently altered by laser hair removal. However, some people do notice rogue hairs growing here and there some time after their series of treatments. This can be addressed with a touch-up treatment as needed.

It’s not too late to get smooth skin before summer. Call our Pottsville or Hazleton office to schedule your laser hair removal consultation.

Just The Facts, Ma’am, About Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair RemovalHere’s a great idea whose time has definitely come – No more waxing, shaving, ingrown hairs, plucking, razor burn, and pain!

One of the most popular services we offer at Keystone Cosmetic Surgery is laser hair removal. Our clients love being hair free and smooth.

Are you considering giving laser hair removal a try? Great! Here are a few things to know before your first appointment:

  • You should avoid shaving or waxing for about six weeks prior to your appointment. Why? Because laser hair removal targets the roots of your body hair, so if you’ve recently waxed or plucked, those roots will be temporarily gone and the laser will have nothing to target.
  • The laser will be calibrated specifically for you – your hair thickness, skin tone, and hair color. Next, a gel or topical numbing agent will be applied to protect your skin. You may experience some slight tingling, heat, or minor discomfort during the procedure, but overall the pain should be minimal, if any. You will be asked to wear eye protection to shield your eyes from the bright light of the laser.
  • Depending on the area being treated, your appointment will last about 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • After your treatment, you may experience minor swelling and redness. This is normal. You should be able to go about your regular daily activities immediately. If you need some mild pain relief, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers.
  • The targeted hair should start to fall out a few days after the procedure. You may have to return for a few follow up sessions to get the most optimum results. You should plan on a follow-up session in abut 4 to 6 weeks. Avoid waxing, plucking, and excessive sun exposure between treatment sessions.
  • After you have completed the necessary sessions, the laser-treated hair will be permanently gone – you won’t have to shave, pluck, or wax again.

Fall is here and holiday parties are just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to schedule a consultation appointment.
