Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) or percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure that uses tiny needles to create microscopic punctures in the skin. At our office, we use the Eclipse MicroPen® with 12 needles. The procedure triggers collagen and elastin production, which improves the skin texture, tone, and uniformity of color. Through these micro-punctures we are also able to apply topical gels, creams, and serums that can penetrate the skin more efficiently, improving the outer layer of the skin. We can also add platelet rich plasma to the skin following your microneedling procedure for even more enhanced results.
Microneedling works by triggering your body’s wound healing response. When the needles of the Eclipse MicroPen® puncture the skin, they create microscopic channels down through the epidermis. The untouched, healthy tissue around the wounds immediately helps in the healing of the adjacent perforations. The healing process initiates the production of new collagen and elastin to heal the wound, sending these proteins to the treated areas. By building new collagen and elastin, the skin becomes more firm, supple, and issues such as wrinkles and stretch marks are noticeably reduced.
Microneedling addresses a variety of skin issues with its collagen and elastin producing effects. While this treatment can be used anywhere on the body, the face, neck, and chest are the typical targets. Unlike laser treatments, microneedling also works on all skin tones without causing hyperpigmentation.
Here are some ways microneedling can improve the condition of your skin:
The Aesthetician at our office conducts microneedling treatment at our office in Pottsville, PA. Before your microneedling session begins, your aesthetician will apply a topical numbing cream and attach a new sterile 12-needle cartridge to the Eclipse MicroPen®. We then select the appropriate pen depth setting based on your treatment needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen is gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding across in one direction. Your aesthetician will repeat this action until they cover the entire treatment area.
Our microneedling patients say the sensation is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, microneedling is easy to tolerate thanks to the topical anesthetic used.
Some of our patients feel they only need a single microneedling treatment every year to achieve the results they seek. Most patients opt for series of three to six treatments, spaced at four to six-week intervals for optimal results. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, unwanted hairloss, or acne scars, 6-8 sessions will likely be recommended spaced at 6-week intervals.
Our patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin, but visible changes with the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Due to the building of collagen and elastin, your results can continue to improve for up to six months, but the specifics depend on your body. The changes are permanent, but as you age, your collagen and elastin production drops year by year. That’s why continuing treatments are recommended to keep up with these decreases.
Immediately following your microneedling session your skin will appear pink and flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. There may also be slight swelling and tightness. This appearance is temporary and typically resolves within several hours to two days. Total healing time depends on the depth of the treatment, skin type, and the skin condition being treated. Patients typically notice an immediate glow, but visible improvement will take about two to four weeks. Microneedling is considered an after-work procedure due to the quick recovery time.
