Planning Liposuction Before Vacation? Here’s What You Should Know!

Beautiful girl touching her healthy skinWe’re getting to a point where we can start to plan for the near future again. This has a lot of people considering a vacation to a sunny location in the coming months. Instead of engaging in restrictive diets and excessive exercise to get the best body contours beforehand, many people schedule a quick trip to their plastic surgeon for a little liposuction. The brief, minimally invasive procedure provides outstanding sculpting not only for vacation but potentially for many years after. It’s a gift that keeps on giving. Still, when planning liposuction as a pre-vacation procedure, there are some things to consider. Namely, the stages of healing that are necessary for optimal results. We’ll discuss this topic here.

What to Expect From Liposuction Recovery

Liposuction is a relatively conservative procedure in comparison to other surgeries. Patients should still expect seven to 10 days of recovery afterward, though. When we say seven to 10 days, we’re referring to the initial healing that occurs through a lot of rest and activity restrictions. After these initial days of recovery, it is not uncommon to still have some tenderness in the surgical area. Also, deep tissue healing is ongoing for at least a few more weeks. To help support this healing, as well as reduce swelling, it is beneficial to continue wearing a compression garment even after returning to work and light activities. After surgery, it is common for the body to experience a sustained inflammatory response as an integral part of healing. This contributes to swelling and, while that side effect may not be painful, it could make the treated area appear “puffy” for some up to 4 weeks. Knowing this, patients can plan their surgery and special events accordingly.

Help Your Body Heal More Quickly

The time it takes to fully recover from liposuction can vary from one person to another, but who doesn’t like the idea of expediting their process if possible! Some of the ways that you might help your body heal optimally after liposuction include:

  • Wear compression as recommended by your surgeon. Do not remove it just because you are feeling better. This garment is used not only for comfort but also to facilitate that deep tissue healing and swelling-reduction.
  • Optimize lifestyle habits. After liposuction, it is more important to eat a very healthy, balanced diet than to severely restrict calories. Your body will need an abundance of nutrients to heal well after surgery. Rather than restrict calories, reduce or cut out alcohol, high-sugar foods and beverages, and high-salt, processed foods. Also, increase your water intake. This can also help swelling to resolve efficiently.
  • Rest. this can be one of the most challenging aspects of surgical recovery for many people. Most of us did not grow up with value placed on rest, so needing more than our norm can feel unsettling. Knowing this, you can go into your surgical recovery more mentally prepared. After liposuction, it is imperative to avoid doing too much too soon. Keep in mind, when tempted to do more than you should, that too much activity can cause swelling, irritation of incisions, and it also increases the risks of postsurgical complications.
