Fat transfer, also called autologous fat injection, plumps up facial features and smoothes out wrinkles using a patient’s own fat. A popular alternative to other wrinkle treatments such as collagen injections, fat transfer to the face is a safe, natural, procedure designed to improve facial contours. Since fat transfer uses your own fat cells, allergic reactions do not occur. With autologous fat injection it is possible to have fat removed via liposuction from your thighs and/or abdomen and then transferred to another area of your body. This may be particularly advantageous when larger volumes of “filler” are needed. Harvesting the fat cells for re-injection is often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as liposuction, tummy tuck or cosmetic breast surgery, and can be used for injection at the same time as these other procedures.
Performed under intravenous sedation anesthesia in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’), fat injections are variable in length and depend on the extent and number of areas being treated. Patients are able to return home immediately afterwards and are able to return to work and comfortably engage in social situations in about 2 – 3 days.
Therefore, when considering fat injections, or indeed any cosmetic procedure, be sure to select a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
